INTERNATIONAL COVENANT OF
ECONOMIC, SOCIAL & CULTURAL RIGHTS
The INTERNATIONAL BILL OF HUMAN RIGHTS contains "The Universal Declaration
of Human Rights" (1948), the "International Covenant on Economic,
Social and Cultural Rights" (1966), the "International Covenant
on Civil and Political Rights" (1966),
and the "Optional Protocol to the latter
Covenant," which together constitute
four stages in the generation of the document
called the International Bill of Human Rights.
"The first treaty, the International Covenant on Economic, Social
and Cultural Rights, recognizes the right to work and to free
choice of employment; to fair wages; to form
and join unions; to social security; to adequate
standards of living; to freedom from hunger;
to health and education. Nations which ratify
the Covenant acknowledge their responsibility to promote
better living conditions for their people.
Nations' reports on their progress in promotion
of these rights are reviewed by a committee
of experts appointed by the Economic and
Social Council."
Please see Articles 22-29 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights that precede, and from which is later developed,
the aforementioned Covenant.
