American University in Cairo, Egypt

September-January, 2011-2012
& February-June, June-July 2012

American University of Cairo (AUC) provides an extraordinary opportunity for foreign students to live and study in a North-African nation. Located in the heart of Cairo, AUC offers opportunities to study intensive Arabic as well as numerous courses in Middle East Studies, Egyptology, Archeology and other social sciences and humanities subjects, as well as Engineering.

A city of over 13 million people, Cairo offers a wealth of cultural opportunities in a place that functions as a crossroads for the sharing of ideas, leadership and trade. The city's characteristics combine ancient and modern aspects, rural and urban, all on the banks of the Nile River. The Cairo Museum, the world's richest repository of pharaonic antiquities, is only a short walk from campus, while the pyramids of Giza, the tombs of Saqqara, and the myriad mosques of medieval Cairo are all within an hour's ride.

Intensive Arabic - The Arabic Language Institute

The Arabic Language Institute is one of the most respected Arabic language study programs in the world. The Institute offers full-time intensive programs beginning three times each year that range in length from the eight-week summer program to one or more years.

The Institute's world-class faculty teaches classes in Modern Standard Arabic, Classical Arabic, and Egyptian Colloquial Arabic at the elementary, intermediate, and advanced levels. Language instruction is 18-20 hours per week with an equivalent amount of time spent on assignments. Successful completion of the Institute's programs culminates in certificates of achievement recognized around the world.

The American University i
n Cairo was founded in 1919 by Americans devoted to education and service in the Middle East. Currently, AUC's academic programs are organized into three schools: Humanities and Social Sciences; Sciences and Engineering; and Business, Economics and Communication. Educational training and major research projects continue to be carried out through the Center for Adult and Continuing Education, the Desert Development Center and the Social Research Center.

AUC considers it essential to integrate foreign students into the society of Egyptian students. There are outstanding opportunities for foreign students to speak Arabic and to amply learn from native students an appreciation of their own culture and heritage and of their responsibilities to society. The university's aim of promoting international understanding is supported by means of scholarship, learned discourse and a multicultural campus environment.

To advance its mission, the university seeks to maintain a highly qualified faculty. Emphasis is placed on excellence in teaching as well as on research, creative work, and faculty members' intellectual contributions to their disciplines. Outstanding administrative, professional and support of staff, leading edge instructional technology and use of other resources are also central to the pursuit of the university's aims.
