C5 (Intermediate Japanese 2) A continuation of C4 or the equivalent. Develops vocabulary, grammatical structures and expressions further, and trains students in the four skills so that they can deal in Japanese with practical matters in their academic as well as social life. Approximately 200 new kanji are introduced. Students will be able to read authentic materials with the help of a dictionary, and to express their opinion.
C6 (Intermediate Japanese 3) A continuation of C5 or the equivalent. Aims at establishing a solid base for students to fully utilize Japanese in academic as well as social contexts. Approximately 200 new kanji are introduced. Non-Japanese students with native proficiency in spoken Japanese may also be accepted. Begins with a review of kanji vocabulary at the elementary school level and will build both reading and expressive competence (writing and speaking). Covers jooyoo kanji, kango vocabulary and idiomatic expressions and practice in oral presentation. Students who would like to take this C8 course should submit the Japanese Language Background Questionnaire along with the application forms.

ICU ACADEMIC CREDIT

The Ministry of Education (Monbusho) in Japan does not permit Japanese universities to issue an official transcript with credits earned for summer programs or for any programs outside the regular academic year. However, upon request, ICU will provide a Letter of Certification describing the amount of work completed and the level of performance attained for those who have successfully completed any of the Summer Courses. Such letters will state that the Summer Courses correspond in content, teaching method and discipline to university level courses which are assigned six academic units of credit. Normally students who have this certificate of completion have no difficulty transferring these units of academic credit to their home institutions.
