Geneva, Switzerland, is the site of the European
headquarters of the United Nations
Palais des Nations and numerous global agencies. It is situated
on picturesque Lake Geneva and enjoys
dramatic
views of both the Alps and Jura Mountains.
Centered in the historic Old Town and reaching
to the bustling modern center of European
finance, Geneva is where one can escape
to
a picnic in the country or mountains
in ten
minutes, or where one never tires of
exploring
this compact jewel of a city, nestled amidst exquisite museums, fine restaurants,
student rathskellers, excellent university
and school of fine arts. A center of Europe, situated close to the
border of France, the lingua franca is French. Geneva has had a long history of independence and has been a place of refuge from religious and political persecution. In 1815, it was incorporated into Switzerland by the Congress of Vienna, which also declared Switzerland permanently neutral, setting up a system of guarantees by the signatories. For these reasons, among others, Geneva was chosen as a site for the League of Nations at the close of the First World War. Since then, Geneva has become the headquarters of many international organizations and host to many conferences of international importance. It is also the current European Headquarters of the United Nations. While much of Geneva's population today is
international, it is strongly populated
with
native Genevois who are cosmopolitan
and
sophisticated, as well as gracious
and welcoming
to Geneva's international community
of diplomats,
business people, students, scholars,
tourists,
and other sojourners. |
