more. From Madrid, one can travel to nearby Toledo, Segovia, Avila, and further to Salamanca, Barcelona, and the Spanish "Riviera." Skiing is an additional attraction for winters in Madrid--only 60 km to Navacerrada. Cotos and Valdesqui are two additional ski resorts. In Madrid one can live and study in one of the most elegant capitals of the world. Learn Castillian Spanish. Meet Spanish fellow students or colleagues. Dine on native Spanish cuisine. Become immersed in the Spanish culture and civilization! The University Complutense of Madrid, formerly known as the University of Madrid, is a public institution and one of the oldest universities in the world, its origin dating back to 1293 through the late fifteenth century. Founded as the "Studium Generale" by King Sancho IV of Castilla in a little town on the bank of the river Henares called Compluto by the Romans, in the 15th century, Pope Kalixt III established three professorships for Latin Grammar. One of their former students, Francisco Jimenez de Cisneros, Archbishop of Toledo and Cardinal, promoted their growth into a full university, its name soon becoming Universitas Complutensis in 1499. Cardinal Cisneros's humanistic and theological spirit inspired the birth of the new university. In 1836 the university was transferred to Madrid and was renamed Universidad Central. In 1943, its name was changed to Universidad de Madrid. In 1970, the name became Universidad Complutense de Madrid, rewarding the initiative of its "founder Cardinal Cisneros." Today it is known as "the most prestigious university in Spain" and one of the most renown universities in the world. Home to 130,000 students, of whom 3,500 are foreign students, 5000 staff teachers, and 2700 non-academic staff administration and services, the university is located amidst beautiful parks and gracious grounds, in which the university houses departments of study in the humanities, mathematics and natural sciences, health sciences, political and social sciences, economics, business, and psychology. Granting 70 official degrees, the University has also established study and research centers in collaboration with well-known universities throughout the world, including Harvard, Paris/Sorbonne, and many more. The Complutense University of Madrid officially comprises: "19 Faculties (Philosophy; Education; Philology; Geography and History; Chemistry; Physics; Mathematics; Biology; Geology; Medicine; Pharmacy; Veterinary Medicine; Odontology; Law; Political and Social Science; Economics and Business; Journalism; Psychology; Fine Arts), 1 Higher Technical School of Computer Science, 6 University Schools (Business Administration; Optometry; Statistics; Nursing, Physiotherapy and Podology; Social Work; Library Science and Documentation), 10 University Colleges and University Schools, 30 University Institutes and 12 Schools for Professional Specialization." In addition, the university schedules debates and conferences in which scientific, political, and business communities participate, which spurs research and teaching in international studies with an interdisciplinary focus. Abundant cultural and extra-curricular activities bring students into contact with the worlds of theater, music, arts, literature, film, sports, and more. Universidad Complutense de Madrid organizes Spanish language, cultural, literature, history, and other courses especially for foreign students.
