Passport Information & Academic Credit

Passport Information

If you do not have a valid passport, you will need one before departure date. If you have not already done so, please apply by the most expeditious route. Passport applications are made to the U.S. Department of State. Your local U.S. Post Office, Clerk of the District Court, and/or a Notary Public can inform you with regard to the location of the nearest application office in your area. Please allow at least two months to expedite the process.

For example, U.S. Department of State indicates that the normal processing time is five weeks from their date of receipt. However, as applications must be accompanied by a certified birth certificate from the State in which one is born, or a valid passport, and two recent passport photos, and as your local office will need time to process your papers, additional preparatory time is required.

Passport applications can be expedited more quickly by additional payments. If you have not already done so, please inquire for full details as soon as possible at your local passport applications office.

Academic Credit

American colleges grant credit for study abroad in most cases, provided that students
(1) contact them before departure,
(2) successfully complete the necessary examinations at the foreign university, and
(3) obtain a proper transcript from the overseas university.

American colleges require a transcript giving details of

  • dates of enrollment,
  • courses taken,
  • number of hours per week in each course, and
  • names of professors.

Only the home college can decide to award transfer credit for academic work done overseas, in much the same way that home colleges can decide to award transfer credit for academic work done at another USA college.

Transcripts are issued by the host institution abroad. These must be obtained by the student before leaving the foreign university.
Students seeking transfer credit are required to note this on their Enrollment Applications and to send an appropriate administrator's recommendation with the application. Students seeking transfer credit are advised to meet early with the college administrator in charge of coordinating transfer credit and to indicate the administrator's name on the Enrollment Application so as to insure proper credit transfer arrangements early.
