Time Frame of Study Abroad Programs
.Students may choose from Short-Term Study (ranging usually from two to four weeks offering 0-3 or 6 credits), Summer Study (usually two to eight weeks offering 6-9 credits), Semester Study (usually a quarter or full semester offering 12-18 credits), and/or Academic Year Study (usually Autumn and Spring terms offering 24-36 credits). Each time frame is suited to the particular needs of participants. For example, teachers, faculty, and other careerists on leave or vacation may choose to study for two to four weeks for renewal, enrichment, and/or to satisfy continuing education requirements. Others may choose to concentrate exclusively on foreign language study during one or two months consecutively to satisfy an academic, professional, or personal goal or requirement. Language/literature majors may choose a semester or academic year abroad to become more fluent in the language and more knowledgeable about a country's people, culture, civilization, and literature. International business, education, or government majors may choose to study abroad for a semester or academic year to specialize in their subject field within a national or regional area. Faculty on sabbatical leave may choose to carry out research in a nation whose native language is known to them, while at the same time taking an advanced linguistic and/or literature course to further hone or polish their language capability. Whenever possible, it is recommended that students consider an academic year abroad, as the benefits are longer lasting with regard to language skills, knowledge, experience, etc. Moreover, the cost of studying abroad for an academic year is normally no more than studying abroad for one semester and studying at one's home university for one semester combined. Eligibility for Study Abroad
Study abroad for undergraduates is generally made available to students with a 2.5 to 4.0 grade point average (GPA on a 4.0 scale). The GPA requirement varies from institution to institution. The reasons for this vary according to academic requirements at the universities. Eligibility requirements, if not posted on each country file herein, generally conform to the above. In the case of short-term regular and intensive language study, persons of all types of preparedness/ readiness are acceptable generally. Final decisions with regard to admissions to all EduServe/GlobaLearn Study Abroad Programs rest with the host institution. Academic Credit
American colleges grant credit for study abroad in most cases, provided that students 1) contact them before departure, 2) successfully complete the necessary examinations at the foreign university, and 3) obtain a proper transcript from the overseas institution. American colleges require a transcript giving details of a) dates of enrollment, b) courses taken, c) number of hours per week in each course, and d) names of professors. Only the American college can decide to award transfer credit for academic work done overseas, in a similar way that an American higher educational institution decides to award transfer credit for students' study at other colleges and universities within The USA. Transcripts are issued by the host institution abroad. These must be obtained by the student before leaving the foreign university. Students seeking transfer credit are required to note this on their Enrollment Applications. Students seeking transfer credit are advised to meet early with the college administrator in charge of coordinating transfer credit and to indicate the Administrator's Name on the Enrollment Application so as to insure proper credit transfer arrangements early. _______________________________________________________________________________ ![]() Legal Terms .
