Both Hebrew and Christian sacred scriptures
are contained in The Holy Bible, which is comprised of historically "Old"
(Jewish) & "New" (Christian)
Testaments, as the Jewish sacred scriptures
provide historical reference for the Christian
sacred scriptures. The Old Testament, called
The Hebrew Bible, was translated from the original Hebrew
that has been faithfully copied by Jewish
scribes and preserved by Hebrew communities
from approximately 1440 B.C. While The Holy Bible contains a different order of the Jewish
sacred scriptures, calling these "the Law, Histories, Poetry, and Prophecy,"
Jewish sacred scriptures have arranged these
Hebrew books differently as "the Law,
Prophets, and Writings." These can be
accessed in the original Hebrew language
and in modern translations of same through
authorized Jewish synagogues and communities.
World Religions Resources
In the interests of greater understanding
among neighbors near and far who are representative
of the world's diverse religions, topics
of world religions as set forth in some modern
encyclopedias and made available in public
libraries have proven to be sound introductions.
Encyclopedia Americana and Encyclopedia Britannica, for example, inform with respect to religions
through articles about the founder/s, leaders, and
related aspects of each faith, written by
indigenous scholars and authorities representative
to each religious tradition. In addition, books called surveys of world religions are published and distributed by major religious and secular publishers. Many are popular versions with photos, art work, anecdotes, etc. Some are more detailed religious versions used for personal study, teaching, and/or seminary purposes. Some are more scholarly and/or reference versions with extensive footnotes and related documentation. Perusing these can help readers to select those texts that best fit respective interests. Some selective or issue-oriented overviews of world religions offered by any one scholar or religion may do so in a reasonable and careful manner to point out some similarities and differences between their own and other religions; these can be helpful introductions if one shares the knowledge base and experience of the author. Moreover, selecting texts with information about each religion authored by indigenous leader/s, scholar/s, and/or practitioners relative to each faith helps to increase reliability, authenticity, accuracy, and depth of knowledge and experience with regard to same. Thus, diverse approaches to world religions are the general norm, the aim being greater understanding among and between persons and nations of diverse religions (and related psychologies, cultures, societies, environments, etc.). Beginning with a sound knowledge base and practice with respect to one's own religion and faith is recommended. As with most any subject, inquiring and reading respectfully is an appropriate way to begin, remembering the lessons of God, humanity, and nature, that while individuals, families, cultures, and religions are diverse; human nature and humankind can share much in common with respect to The Creator. ________________ - Pages 1, 2 Copyright 2011 by EduServe, Inc.
